Twenty-One

Ian clamps onto her shoulders and in a low voice rasps, “What the fuck are you doing here?”

“I—I—”

“You can’t be here.” He grips her wrist and tugs her after him, away from the people.

Allie remains quiet as he drags her with him, turning every so often and getting farther away from anyone nearby. Finally, they’re in the dimly lit tunnel she thinks looks familiar.

Ian yanks her close and stares without blinking into her eyes. “You were never here. You don’t know anything about this. You won’t tell anyone. Because if you do, you’ll be in danger. And not just you, but Gavin, me, your parents, everyone you know and care for. Do you understand?”

She can’t believe what he’s saying, but the look in his eyes is sincere. And scared.

“I’m not lying when I tell you that Charles and Sylvia aren’t the only ones to fear. There’s another group that makes them look like playground bullies. Conspiracies and murder are just the tip of what they’re up to. You can’t know.” He shakes her. “Tell me you don’t know.”

“I don’t know anything.”

“And you won’t tell Gavin. If you love him, you’ll say nothing.”

She knows Ian loves his cousin, and if he’s scared, she is too. “I won’t. I won’t say anything.”

“Good. Go home. We’ll never speak of this. You’ll never speak about this. Not even in the privacy of your own home, your car, nowhere.”

“What? N-not in my house?” Oh no. Is the house bugged? The car? Do people listen to her? Do they hear her with Gavin, making love, arguing? Are they watching her?

“Shit. Allie, stop. Just go home. None of this is real. It’s all a bad dream,” he mutters. “Like the rest of your fucked-up life.”

“Ian?” She is so confused.

He shocks her anew by pressing a kiss to her forehead. “I love you, Allie. But you need to stop digging. You won’t like what you find.” He shoves her into another room with a wooden stairway. Not the way she’d come at all. “Go. Now.”

She rushes from him and climbs upstairs and through a hidden panel into the bathroom of an abandoned house. The sun has finally set, leaving the area dark. She exits the building through the back, not sure where she is. But after walking for a good ten minutes, she spots the corner of Shunpike and Levy.

She hurries to her car and drives, not sure where she should go.

Ida told her to trust no one. Ian said the same.

Since her phone still won’t turn on and she can’t trust her already anxious parents or Gavin about what just happened, she thinks about calling Leia but doesn’t want to drag her friend into the chaos. If Ian’s own cousin isn’t safe, Leia might not be either.

But there is one person Allie knows she can trust. Detective Felix Pryor. He’s a man outside her community, apart from her life yet knowledgeable about casework. A man who can help her and is known to have suspected anyone and everyone when it comes to solving crime.
